Opt for slim, tripod-based designs under 35cm wide to save floor space. Arc lamps work well if you need light without a large footprint. Choose adjustable brightness or dimmer-compatible bulbs. Position in a corner or beside the bed rather than centre room.
Arc lamps have an overhead curved arm that extends light over seating without a tall central post. Standard floor lamps stand upright with light above. Arc lamps suit small spaces and reading nooks; standard lamps work in corners or beside furniture. Both offer ambient or task lighting.
