Side-Opening vs End-Opening Ottoman Beds: Which Is Better?

Phoenix Ottoman Storage Bed - 3ft Single - White

Choosing an ottoman bed often begins with the amount of storage it offers. The opening direction tends to feel like a smaller detail—until the bed is in the room and you realise the lid lifts towards the only place you can comfortably stand.

A side-opening ottoman is accessed from one of the long sides of the bed. An end-opening model is normally lifted from the foot. The storage capacity can be similar, but the experience of reaching it is quite different.

The right choice depends less on the size of the bed and more on what surrounds it. A wall, radiator, bedside cabinet or chest of drawers can turn an otherwise sensible design into an awkward one. Before buying, it is worth picturing where you will stand, how the mattress will lift and which part of the storage you will reach most often.

How the two opening styles work

On an end-opening ottoman, the lifting platform is normally hinged near the headboard and raised from the foot of the bed. As the base opens, the foot end rises while the head end stays attached.

On a side-opening ottoman, the platform is hinged along one long edge and raised from the opposite side. You stand beside the bed rather than at the foot to reach the storage.

Both designs usually use gas-assisted mechanisms to help with the weight of the mattress platform. They are intended to make lifting more manageable, not to make the bed feel weightless. The mattress still affects how the mechanism operates, which is why its suitability and weight should be considered alongside the frame.

The terms describe the direction of access, not the amount of storage. Two ottoman beds of the same size may offer very similar internal space even if they open differently.

When does an end-opening ottoman make sense?

End-opening ottoman beds suit bedrooms with a clear area at the foot of the bed. You approach the bed from the centre, lift the platform and reach into the storage from that position.

This arrangement can work well when both sides of the bed have bedside tables or when the bed sits centrally against a wall. You do not need to dedicate one side to opening the storage, so the room can remain balanced.

It is also useful when two people sleep in the bed. Neither person’s side becomes the designated storage side, and there is no need to decide whether the bed should open to the left or right.

The main drawback is the space required at the foot. If the bed faces a wardrobe, dressing table or wall, you may not have enough room to stand comfortably and lift the base. The mechanism may still open, but reaching into it while squeezed into a narrow gap will quickly become irritating.

A television stand, blanket box or bench at the foot of the bed may also need to be moved whenever you want to access the storage. If that furniture is heavy, ottoman storage that looked convenient can end up being rarely used.

End-opening designs often make sense in a squarer room where the distance between the bed and the opposite wall is generous. In a long, narrow bedroom with limited space at the foot, a side-opening model may be easier to live with.

When is a side-opening ottoman more practical?

A side-opening ottoman is useful when there is good access along one side of the bed but very little room at the foot.

This is common in smaller bedrooms where the foot of the bed sits close to a wall, wardrobe or chest of drawers. Instead of trying to operate the storage from that narrow gap, you can open it from the clearer side.

Side opening can also be a good solution when the bed is positioned lengthways against a wall. If the hinged side sits beside the wall and the bed opens towards the room, the storage can remain accessible from the open side.

This layout often works in:

  • Smaller guest bedrooms
  • Teenagers’ rooms
  • Attic bedrooms with an unusual shape
  • Rooms where the bed faces a wardrobe
  • Bedrooms with a desk or drawers near the foot of the bed

The important point is which side opens. Some models are made specifically to open from the left or right, while others may allow a choice during assembly. Never assume the direction can be reversed.

Look at the bed from the foot end and confirm how the manufacturer describes the opening side. “Left” and “right” can be interpreted differently when you are facing the bed rather than lying in it, so a diagram or product photograph is more reliable than the wording alone.

Think about the furniture you already have

A tape measure will tell you whether the bed fits, but it will not tell you whether the storage feels easy to use.

Stand where the new bed will go and look at the surrounding furniture. On which side is the bedroom entrance? Where are the bedside cabinets? Does a radiator take up part of the wall? Will the wardrobe doors be open while you are trying to reach the bed storage?

For an end-opening bed, imagine standing at the foot while the mattress is raised. You need a stable position from which to lift the base and place items inside. If an open wardrobe door cuts across that space, the arrangement may be less practical than it first appears.

For a side-opening bed, consider the full length of the accessible side. A bedside cabinet near the head may be fine, but a desk or chest positioned further down could prevent you from standing where you naturally want to lift.

Masking tape can help. Mark the complete external size of the bed on the floor—not just the mattress size—then walk around it as if the rest of the furniture were already present. The clearer route usually reveals the better opening direction.

Which opening is better for reaching everything inside?

End opening gives you central access from the foot of the bed. Items near the bottom are easy to reach, although belongings stored close to the headboard may require you to lean further inside.

This becomes more noticeable with a larger bed. A double ottoman bed is easier to reach across than a wide king or super king, particularly if the storage compartment is deep.

With side opening, the storage runs across the width of the bed from your position. Items along the opening edge are easy to reach, while those placed against the hinged side are further away.

Neither arrangement is difficult when the storage is organised sensibly. The trouble usually starts when small belongings are placed loose inside a large compartment. Storage bags, shallow boxes or soft containers make it easier to pull an entire group of items towards you instead of leaning in to find one thing.

Put heavier or frequently used belongings nearest the opening. Lighter, occasional-use items can sit towards the hinges. Avoid stacking items so high that they interfere with the frame when it closes.

How often will you use the storage?

Opening direction matters more when the ottoman is used frequently.

If the space will hold spare bedding that comes out a few times a year, either design can work as long as there is enough room to operate it. A slightly less convenient position may not cause much trouble.

If the ottoman will hold everyday clothing, towels or children’s belongings, choose the direction that gives you the most natural access. You should not have to move a chair, shift a bedside cabinet or squeeze between the bed and wall every time.

It may also be worth asking whether lift-up storage is right for items used daily. A storage bed with drawers could be more convenient if the room gives them enough space to open. Ottoman storage is excellent for making use of the full area beneath the mattress, but that does not mean everything in the bedroom belongs there.

Does bed size change the decision?

The opening principle stays the same, but a larger mattress and platform naturally create a larger moving section.

On a king or super king bed, the distance across the storage compartment is greater. With an end-opening model, the area near the headboard may feel further away. With a side-opening model, reaching the opposite long edge may take more effort.

Larger beds also need more space around them. The difference between an accessible side and a cramped side becomes much more noticeable once the bed is in place.

The mattress must be suitable for the lifting mechanism. An unsuitable or excessively heavy mattress may make the base harder to operate, while one that is too light may affect how the assisted mechanism behaves. When choosing from different mattresses, follow the bed manufacturer’s guidance rather than assuming every mattress of the correct size will work equally well.

Do not forget the space above the bed

Most people measure the floor but forget what happens as the mattress rises.

A standard bedroom ceiling is unlikely to cause difficulty for many designs, but sloping ceilings, low eaves and shelves above the bed deserve attention. This is particularly important in loft rooms.

The raised mattress and bedding need enough room to move without meeting a light fitting, wall shelf or window ledge. A thick duvet may also shift as the bed opens, so the frame should not be operated beneath anything fragile.

If the room has a sloping ceiling, study how the chosen model lifts. The highest point of the open platform should move into the clearest part of the room, not towards the lowest section of the ceiling.

Safety and ease of use

Whichever opening direction you choose, the bed should be assembled exactly as instructed. The lifting mechanism, support frame and mattress work together, and incorrect fitting can affect how safely the base opens and closes.

Use the handle or lifting strap provided rather than pulling from the mattress or the corner of the frame. Keep hands away from hinges and make sure nothing projects above the storage compartment before lowering the base.

Children should not operate or play with the mechanism. The storage area is designed for belongings, not as a place to climb or hide.

It is also sensible to open the bed before placing other furniture around it permanently. This gives you a chance to check that the movement is clear and that you can stand comfortably throughout.

Which opening direction should you choose?

An end-opening ottoman is usually the better fit when the bed sits centrally in the room and there is plenty of clear space at the foot. It provides balanced access without dedicating one side of the bed to storage.

A side-opening ottoman is often more practical when the foot of the bed is restricted but one long side remains open. It can be especially useful when the bed sits against a wall—provided the hinge and opening directions are correct for that position.

Do not make the choice from the bed photograph alone. Sketch the room, include the other furniture and mark where you will stand. Then think about what will be stored inside and how often you expect to retrieve it.

The storage space may be hidden once the bed is closed, but the way you reach it will affect every use. Choose the opening that follows the natural route through your bedroom, and the ottoman will feel like part of the room rather than a piece of furniture you have to work around.
