Wide Sideboards

Found 127 Items

Wide sideboards are large storage cabinets found in almost all dining rooms in the UK. People use them to store dishes, tablecloths and household goods. The flat top holds lamps, photos and decorative items. They\'re usually placed against walls in sitting rooms or dining areas to help with organization.

These cabinets work well in homes needing extra storage. In open-plan rooms, sideboards help define different areas. They balance out larger furniture and provide useful surfaces.

Wide sideboards are made from different materials to match many home styles. Oak remains popular due to its strength and traditional appearance. Many houses favour oak as it matches with various furniture and doesn\'t show marks easily.

Walnut sideboards feature deep browns and occasional purple undertones in the wood. The rich colour suits both older houses and modern flats. Walnut tends to darken slightly with age, developing character over time.

A properly made sideboard should last 20 years or more with reasonable care. Many families keep solid wood sideboards for generations, particularly those made from oak or walnut. The better examples become heirlooms passed between family members.

Wide Sideboards

What are the dimensions of a wide sideboard in the UK? UK sideboards come in several width options. The smallest wide models measure about 150 cm across (that's 4 Feet 9 Inches). The largest stretch to 220 cm (7 Feet 2 inches inches). Most stand between 75 and 90 cm tall (30-35 inches) and have a depth of around 40-50 cm (16-20 inches).

TV sideboards tend to be shorter to keep televisions at eye level when seated. These usually stand 50-75 cm tall (20-30 inches) and have reinforced tops to support the weight of televisions and equipment

Finishes and Styles Available in Wide Sideboards

Walnut Wide Sideboards

Showcasing rich, brown tones with unique grain patterns Walnut Sideboards typically feature:

  • Deep chocolate brown to purplish-brown colouration
  • Natural variation in grain and colour
  • Both modern and traditional designs

Walnut sideboards complement natural colour schemes and add warmth to living rooms and dining areas.

Grey-Washed Wide Sideboards

Grey-washed sideboards have gained popularity in contemporary interiors, offering:

  • Subtle grey tones that highlight the natural wood grain beneath
  • Versatility to complement both warm and cool colour schemes
  • A relaxed, coastal aesthetic
  • Good compatibility with blue, navy and pastel interior themes

Grey wash technique applies a translucent grey finish that allows the wood grain to remain visible giving it character.

Mirrored Wide Sideboards

Mirrored sideboards make bold statements while helping spaces appear larger:

  • Reflective surfaces that increase light in the room
  • Often featuring mirrored panels on drawer fronts and doors
  • Art Deco influences in many designs
  • Formal appearance suitable for dining rooms

These sideboards require regular cleaning to maintain their reflective properties but offer striking visual impact.

Oak Wide Sideboards

Oak remains one of the most enduring materials for sideboards in the UK:

  • Golden to medium brown colouration
  • Prominent grain patterns providing visual interest
  • Exceptional durability and longevity
  • Available in both traditional and contemporary designs

Often polished with natural oil or lacquer, these finishes protect an Oak sideboard while enhancing the wood's natural beauty.

Wide Sideboards

Dark Oak Wide Sideboards

Dark oak sideboards offer a more dramatic alternative to natural oak:

  • Rich, deep brown tones achieved through staining processes
  • Traditional appearance suitable for period properties
  • Substantial visual weight that anchors large rooms
  • Often featuring traditional detailing like cornicing or turned legs

These sideboards work particularly well in spaces with warm colour schemes and traditional furnishings.

Painted Wide Sideboards

Painted sideboards provide flexibility in colour matching with existing décor:

  • Available in virtually any colour, with white, cream, grey and navy being particularly popular
  • Often combining painted bodies with natural wood tops
  • Shaker-inspired designs featuring clean lines and minimal ornamentation
  • Ability to be refinished if tastes change

Many painted sideboards use hard-wearing eggshell or satin finishes that resist marks while providing a subtle sheen.

Fluted Wide Sideboards

Fluted sideboards incorporate vertical or horizontal ridges for textural interest:

  • Linear grooves carved into door and drawer fronts
  • Contemporary interpretation of classical architectural elements
  • Appealing interaction with light creating shadow play
  • Often combined with smooth surfaces for contrast

This style has seen significant growth in popularity, particularly in contemporary living spaces where texture adds visual interest.

High-Gloss Wide Sideboards

High-gloss sideboards create a distinctly modern aesthetic:

  • Highly reflective, mirror-like finishes
  • Clean, streamlined appearances with minimal visible hardware
  • Available in numerous colours, with white, black and grey being most common
  • Push-to-open mechanisms often replacing traditional handles

These sideboards require careful maintenance to preserve their pristine appearance but make a strong contemporary statement.

Other Dining Room Furniture

Dining Tables

When pairing dining tables with wide sideboards, consider:

Wide Sideboards
  • Matching wood types for cohesion (oak with oak, walnut with walnut)
  • Complementary shapes—rectangular tables typically work well with linear sideboards
  • Proportional sizing—large sideboards pair naturally with substantial tables
  • Consistent design language across both pieces

Popular dining table options include extending tables for flexible seating arrangements and round tables for smaller spaces.

Dining Chairs

Dining chairs should harmonise with both the table and sideboard:

  • Upholstered chairs add comfort for extended dining
  • Wooden chairs in matching timber create a coordinated appearance
  • Mixed-material chairs (wood frames with fabric seats) offer a balanced approach
  • Consider stackable options for occasional extra seating that can be stored

Most UK households opt for sets of 4, 6 or 8 dining chairs depending on space and typical entertaining needs.

Display Cabinets

Display cabinets partner effectively with wide sideboards to provide additional storage:

  • Tall display cabinets complement the horizontal lines of sideboards
  • Glass-fronted options showcase prized dinnerware or collectibles
  • Corner cabinets maximise use of space in square rooms
  • Matching finishes create a cohesive appearance

When combining these pieces, allow sufficient space between them to prevent the room feeling overcrowded.

Dining Sets

Pre-coordinated dining sets offer a straightforward approach to furnishing:

  • Matched sideboards, tables and chairs
  • Consistent finishes and design elements
  • Often more economical than purchasing pieces separately
  • Simplified decision-making process

However, individually selected pieces allow for more personalisation and can be acquired gradually as budget allows.
